Porsche Certified Pre-Owned Program vs. BMW Used Cars
A certified pre-owned (CPO) luxury vehicle brings you more than the thrill of owning a fabulous car; it also brings peace of mind. When you buy a CPO car, you get the assurance of the manufacturer that the vehicle performs precisely to their standards, which means you’ll never sacrifice performance for price. The CPO vehicle programs of Porsche and BMW have one goal in mind: to give more drivers the opportunity to experience the legendary performance and pure driving pleasure their cars offer. Let’s take a look at the CPO programs these two leading luxury manufacturers offer and see how they compare.
Each CPO program offered by dealers and carmakers begins with defining which cars are eligible for CPO status. CPO vehicles typically include low-mileage trade-ins and lease returns.
BMW—BMW has two tiers of CPO offerings. To qualify for their standard CPO status, the BMW must be newer than 6 model years, have a minimum of six months in service or 6,000 miles, and have no more than 60,000 miles. Their Elite status CPOs must be newer models and have miles between 300 and 15,000 on the odometer.
Porsche—Porsche’s eligibility requirements are some of the most generous in the industry, which speaks to the confidence they have in their cars. Eligible cars come from the current model year and the eight previous model years and can have up to 100,000 miles. Porsches maintain their value well, which is why they won the Kelly Blue Book award for Best Resale Value among Luxury Brands, and which is why Porsche can be so generous in its CPO program.
Since the main appeal of a CPO vehicle is that the car is just like new without the new car price, the warranty is a big part of the package. The warranty is the mechanism carmakers use to stand behind their CPO cars and demonstrate how confident they are in the quality of the vehicles.
BMW—BMW offers 1 additional year of full, unlimited mileage coverage after the original 4-year/ 50,000-miles factory warranty on all CPO vehicles. If the original warranty has expired, the CPO warranty begins on the date of purchase, but coverage will not extend beyond 6 years or 100,000 miles from the original purchase date of the vehicle. BMW also offers additional warranty plans to extend the warranty to a total of 6 years for additional fees. Their warranty is designed to provide coverage for defects in workmanship and materials and is subject to limitations. The warranty is fully transferable for a small fee.
Porsche—Porsche CPO cars have a full 2-year, unlimited mileage warranty that begins either after the expiration of the original factory warranty or on the date of the CPO sale, depending upon the age of the car, for a total of 6 full years of coverage. This comprehensive warranty covers 100 percent of the costs for labor performed by Porsche-trained technicians and the costs for genuine Porsche replacement parts. The Porsche warranty is fully transferable.
Another way luxury car manufacturers back their CPO vehicles is by offering generous roadside assistance packages designed to provide peace of mind and security while on the road. Both BMW and Porsche offer complete 24-hour roadside assistance for their CPO vehicles for the duration of the warranty, with benefits that include the following:
- Battery jump starts
- Fuel assistance
- Lock-out services
- Towing services
- Emergency valet services
- Personalized trip interruption services, including lodging, meals, and replacement transportation
CPO vehicles are subjected to thorough inspections prior to earning their CPO status. These inspections are meant to restore the vehicle as close to original condition as possible, inside and out. Both BMW and Porsche have comprehensive, multi-point Certified Pre-Owned vehicle inspection programs that are conducted by factory-trained technicians. All the vehicle’s systems are vigorously tested and reconditioned to meet precise mechanical and cosmetic standards. Only genuine Porsche or BMW parts are used to make necessary repairs. The goal is to restore the vehicle to its original factory-fresh condition.
If you’re in the market for a luxury car, buying a certified pre-owned vehicle is an excellent option. Both BMW and Porsche take their CPO programs seriously and are fully committed to putting their stamp of approval on only the vehicles that meet their exacting standards for performance and aesthetics. Don’t wait; drive home a CPO luxury car today!
